The Splendid Sampler - Scrap Star

Decided to go ahead and piece this one following the instructions - square, rectangle, and triangle pieces.  I find it very tedious to handle these small pieces of fabric.  Turned out OK, but I should have chosen another color rather than the dark blue for one of the star points.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that my finished block was pretty close to 6.5".  With all those seams, I never know if it'll turn out correctly and I'm doing my best at a scant 1/4" seam.

The Splendid Sampler - My Version of the Easter Bunnies

Ok, so I didn't like this block.  But I digitized it anyway for applique.  Never stitched it out.

Then someone on The Splendid Sampler FB group said did you notice what it looks like when turned upside down??  Do you see a frog?  She sketched it out and gave permission for us to use.

So... I did just that and used her drawing for inspiration.  Here's my version of the Easter Bunnies block, which I call Spring Forward.

The Splendid Sampler - Checkerboard

The Checkerboard block.  I chose to paper piece this one!  Much easier than working with little squares!!  This block uses all the fabrics that will be in the quilt.  I think most have 2 repeats in this little 6.5" block!

The Spendid Sampler - Crocheted Thoughts

I was excited when I saw this block!  I have lots of crochet items and pieces from many of my now deceased family members.  Even some I made.  Sadly I don't know who made what, but I have a huge 2 ft x 2 ft bucket full of items.  I was lucky enough to find the perfect match with the golden fabric I'm using in this Sampler.  It's a bit tattered and broken, but still beautiful.

To protect the crochet, I adhered it between the blue background fabric and fine bridal netting.  Then I treated the layers as one piece of fabric.  Once in the quilt, there will be a small border of the golden fabric - only about 1/4" wide.  I needed more blank area than the original pattern called for.

The Splendid Sampler - Iowa

Today's block is called Iowa.  Got this one done in a flash!!!  A chance to use a couple of the larger prints of my fabric selection and actually have the designs show up a bit more.

The Spendid Sampler - Local Quilt Shop

This one is paper pieced.  Rather than hand embroider the sign, I digitized it in my embroidery software (words and outer ring stitches), stitched it out, then machine appliqued it onto the house block.  Remember these blocks are only 6.5" unfinished, so the applique is an inch by an inch & a quarter!  As far as hand work on this one...I hand sewed a running stitch along the applique seam allowance so I could easily stitch it down.  The name is what popped into my head rather than the suggested "Quilt Shoppe".

The Spendid Sampler - Friends Around the Square

I paper pieced this one.  After ripping and resewing twice with the same result (aaargh)....I've decided my friends have paired up for a particular project around this square! LOL

The Splendid Sampler - blocks so far

A group pic of the blocks so far so I can have a link to enter the current challenge.

The Splendid Sampler - Snug As A Bug

This 6.5" block was supposed to be hand embroidered.  Since I do as little handwork as I possibly can, I digitized this with my Bernina Embroidery Software and let the machine sew it out.  I did, however, give a nod to hand embroidery and actually used a needle and thread to sew the outline square.  Whup! Whup!!!

The Splendid Sampler - Focal Point

Finished this one up just in time for the release of the next one tomorrow!  My block looks a little different than it's supposed to.  I have one inner 'frame' rather than 2.  Sewed the inner colors together wrong and decided I like the way it looked anyway!  I have my own Focal Point!!

Machine Cover

Finally got around to making a cover for the Juki 2010.  I love this straight stitch only machine!  It's my go to for paper piecing mainly because of the cutter.  Tap the heel of the foot pedal and the thread cuts.  So nice for paper piecing.

I often take this machine to retreats or I take the Bernina Artista 630.  It's my go to machine for piecing.  While at retreats, I had often wanted one of those pads with pockets to help with the numerous smaller items we clutter around our machines.  So with the help of a 3-one yard packet of cute machine/sewing items fabrics.....ta-daaaa!!!
