My Secret Garden - Bonus Block 1-July

Finally got around to putting this block together.  We got 2 blocks in July.  I haven't even begun the August block and I'm behind several blocks on The Splendid Sampler.  I'll get caught up eventually.....

So here's the bonus block.

The Splendid Sampler - Top of the Hill

Finally got around to finishing this bonus block.  Had it fused, but not sewn.  The 'moon' is a circle that had been cut out from a previous block.  As I was digging through my fabric, it just popped up on top saying "use me, use me!!"  Decided to do a combo of a couple stitches on the Bernina 830 and make a Herky Jerky looking stitch to applique the 2 pieces down. Wasn't all that happy with how the moon looked, so I did a combo of another stitch changing the width on 2 selections and leaving one default.  I like the look much better now.

The Splendid Sampler - Summer's Gift

Sunday's block is a pieced and applique block.  Rather than another round center, I decided to omit that applique and do some decorative stitching.  This block I did on my sewing machine.

The Splendid Sampler - Circle of Love

I had fun with this cute block!  It was to be lots of cut pieces of fabric and appliqued onto the background.  Ummm....don't think so!!!  I decided to create an embroidered block.  I liked that so much I decided to create an embroidered applique block using one piece of fabric on top of the background and cut away portions.  I liked that too!  Here they are:
Circle of Love embroidered

Circle of Love embroidered applique
My fabric sorta cupped after the final satin stitch cover, so I did a bit of free motion veins.  Fixed that problem! LOL  This would not have happened had I widened the cover stitches a bit more.

Thursday's block was piecing.  Easy piecing.  Rectangles with corners blocked off.  Easy!!

The Splendid Sampler - Summer Flip Floppin'

This is the latest bonus block.  So cute!  I digitized in Bernina Embroidery Software.  Didn't want a flower at the toe area, and after some hesitation with a heart, it struck me to put USA on the heart.  Love it!!  Love USA!!

The Splendid Sampler - Sewing Nut

An appropriately named block!!  This is Sunday's block.  Not much sewing going on for me lately, but I got this block finished before tomorrow's block comes out.  I used fused applique and machine stitched this one.  I'm slow enough at this, but I also pull to the back and hand tie all thread tails, use a fray check on the knots, then trim.  Just don't like the look of over stitching or back stitching on some things and the auto knot on some machines doesn't hold well, so I take the time to hand tie.

Sewing Nut
We got a really cute bonus block today and I took it to the embroidery software to digitize.  Hopefully will get it stitched out tomorrow!

The Splendid Sampler - Stitch in the Garden

Thursday's block was to be hand embroidered and I again digitized it in embroidery software.  It's a darling little block!

The Splendid Sampler - Pincushion Love

Got today's block done!  Yay!!!  This was another applique with a bit of hand stitching.  I decided to do fusible machine applique and machine stitching.  The buttons, however, I actually sewed on by hand!  Yep, needle and thread! haha

The Splendid Sampler - Pencils

I haven't done a lot of sewing this last week.  Managed to get a bit of cutting done for BOM and completed Thursday's Splendid Sampler block.  Pencils is a paper pieced block - fast and fun.

 Off to download today's block!

The Splendid Garden - Sew South block

More back to the embroidery software! LOL  Rather than digitize another appliqued hexagon in the center of the center one, I digitized a smaller straight stitch hexagon to hold down the green fabric and left a seam allowance to fringe.  In the Bernina Embroidery Software Designer Plus, we have a collection in our decorative stitches section called Ornaments.  These designs are usually used with Monograming, but there are a few that make really great embellishments.  I used one on the dark blue hexagons, enlarging it to my liking.

My Secret Garden BOM - Oatlands, VA

July's BOM is actually 2.  She added a bonus block, which I will work on soon.  Basically the same block with a flip and one different color.  The name of this one is Oatlands, Virginia.

The Splendid Sampler - Flights of Friendship block

Today's block is made up of 1" finished squares!!  Such fun hanging onto and aligning those small pieces! LOL  At least I simplified the HSTs by using the strip tube method.

The Splendid Sampler - Balls in the Air block

This is Sunday's block, a paper pieced one.  There are tiny slivers of 4 different neutral fabrics on top/bottom and left/right.  Hope you can see them.  Not a really hard block, but I'm not the fastest at paper piecing!

The Splendid Sampler - Vintage Flower Basket

Decided to do the applique process by embroidery machine.  Not that it's that much faster, but less tedious.  Digitizing goes pretty fast for me as long as I keep things fairly simple.  Trimming the appliques in the hoop is a bit tedious, but not so much as machine sewing around each little curvy applique.  And the machine can sew the applique much faster than I can manually.

Here's my embroidery machine walkin' and talkin' for me with today's Vintage Flower Basket.

The Splendid Sampler - Inchy Hexagon Club block

42 tiny hexagon templates to make and cut out?  42 tiny hexagon fabric pieces to cut out, hand stitch around the seam allowances, painstakingly press over the templates and THEN hand sew them together to make a 6.5" flower ring block??!!!!  I think not!  Open my embroidery software?  I think so!

So here is my rendition of the Inchy Hexagon Club block.

The Splendid Sampler - The Wishful Garden

Hand embroidery again.  Nope, I used decorative stitches on my machine.  I spent more time playing with stitches than it took to put together this little block!  Finally a block with large enough pieces to use this stripe fabric!  The stitch stacked strips are 1" wide finished.  I fray checked the ends like crazy before trimming.  Will need to take extra care with this block until it gets sewn into the top.

The Splendid Sampler - Lemonade

Thursday's block.  Didn't take long to make it, just had to get around to it!   Finished just in time to get tomorrow's block! Ha!  I have more of a limeade rather than a lemonade center.

Cottage Romance - Jacobs Ladder Blocks

Got the 8 blocks sewn and decided I needed to get a picture of the progress so far.  Looking good!  The truest colors are at the far right of the picture.  Next will be the corner blocks and then I'll sew this center section together before continuing with the next round of blocks.

The Splendid Sampler - Selvage Savers

I'm not a selvage saver.  I know I'd never use them.  And along comes this block.  It was to be made using selvages.  Oh well! haha   One of these days I'm going to sit down and start sewing strip blocks and use up some of my stash.  One of these days....  I've seen some very pretty strip quilts.

Here is today's strip block.

Cottage Romance

Working on the second set of blocks now.  Did a test block and it was just fine (hanging on the wall).  So now I'm ready to sew all the pieces into blocks.  Loving these colors.  Hard to see, but the white in the 4-patch is a tone on tone leaf vein and the larger triangles are aqua dots.

The Splendid Sampler - The Constant Needle

This was Thursday's block.  In my world, the needle is the sewing machine needle! My block was fused and machine appliqued.

The Splendid Sampler - Matthew's Block - Bonus

We got a bonus block this morning.  So I thought I'd just whip it out real quick before getting back to work on the Cottage Romance Quilt.  Ha, I say...HA!!  48 little pieces later....and I didn't put all the strips around the center block....and it's mid-afternoon, but I've finished this little 6.5" block!   Since I didn't put all the pieces in the center section, I over compensated and made the center section a little too large.  So I trimmed it down and lost the true HSTs, but I rather like the look of those small dark points!

The Splendid Sampler - Blossoming

Today's block was to be another hand embroidery.  So I digitized it.  Tried first to do a auto-digitize for redwork.  I didn't like the end result, so I manually digitized the design.  It was also shown in colors as well as one and I went with one color - a pale blue on a dark blue fabric..  So here's my  version of the Blossoming block.

Cottage Romance Quilt

Ever since I saw the 6-part quilt in McCall's Quilting Magazine, January/February 2015, I knew this was what I wanted to make for the new (at that time) queen bed in the guest room.  About that time, Connecting Threads introduced a new collection of fabrics called Luminesense.  I ordered and it's been sitting waiting on me.  I've finally begun!  Yay!!!

Here is the quilt as pictured in McCall's Quilting.  It measures 95.5" x 95.5" finished.

The Spendid Sampler - Stitching Fashion

This little paper pieces block was actually quite challenging!  It was give to use as one block rather than individual sections.  So we had to remember to allow for seam allowances.  Ooops!  Me? Forget a seam allowance??  Yep!! haha

Stitching Fashion
My sewing background was mainly clothing for many many years, so this little block brought back memories of making my own clothes back in the day.

Shopping Cart Cover

My son and girlfriend had never heard of a shopping cart cover!  What??!!!  After seeing pictures, they wanted one and I volunteered to make it.  There are lots of free instructions out there, but I chose this one mainly because it has a printable pattern.

I used pink fleece on the underside and a pretty floral on top for our 7 mo. granddaughter.  Since I didn't have a shopping cart at my house and wasn't about to run to Walmart or a grocery store just to take a picture.....I rigged up something using boxes and a foot stool!  And since I have no cute babies at my house, I had to dig in my fall decor storage to find this Mr. Raggedy Andy that I pull out each year.

It'll be shipped out next week on it's way to Washington, DC.

The Splendid Sampler - Bonus Block

This bonus block is called Derby Day in honor of the Kentucky Derby.  It was to be a hat with a heart on it.  Well, I didn't want to make a hat for my quilt.  Instead I decided to leave off the heart and turn it into a pincushion.  Hmmmm....looks more like a space ship!   So here's my Derby Day Pincushion Space Ship block!!!
Derby Day
The applique was sewn using my sewing machine.  I used decorative stitches from my machine to fancy up the plain blue hat band and chose one 'flower-ish' stitch for the pin head.  Yep, sew one small flower, change thread colors, sew another small flower, change thread colors......

The Splendid Sampler - Sunday Best

This is my interpretation of Sunday's block, Sunday Best.  The original had a rabbit dressed in a vest holding one tulip with leaves.  I'm not a rabbit or bunny fan, so I added more tulips and created a little bird dressed in a tie.  I used stitches from my machine after fusing the pieces in place.

The Splendid Sampler - Inspector Sidekick

This is the block from last Thursday.  I'm a bit behind once again, which is so easy with 2 blocks coming out a week...for me anyway!  The original used HSTs to make the geese block.  I chose to make my geese blocks more traditional.

So here's Inspector Sidekick

The Splendid Sampler - Hand in Hand

This little block is 3-D!  The dark blue fabric is folded and sandwiched in between two strips of background fabric then sewn.  When opened and pressed, the folded fabric becomes the point with open sides.  We had a template to use to cut the shape from our points fabrics.  Fun!  I have a pattern for making 3-D flying geese with this fold and sew method, but have never gotten around to making it.  Hmmm....this might get those juices going!  We'll see! LOL

Here is the 6.5" block, Hand in Hand.

My Secret Garden BOM - May's Block

Pinwheels and more pinwheels!!  This is Hershey Park, PA, block 5.  Since there are 48 HSTs, I used the strip tube method.  So fast and easy!  And the cuts are spot on as far as the size.  Great method when needing a lot of identical HSTs.

The Splendid Sampler - Just for You Bonus Block

Finally got this one finished.  I made it so much harder on myself than it needed to be.  I wanted finished edges to applique down, so I thought...why not just sew a fusible to the back and turn right sides out?  Easy, right?  Should have been, but no....I decided to use a very fine, no backing fusible which, even if the pieces were larger, would have made turning more difficult.  So I procrastinated...a lot! haha

Here is the, I think the FIRST, bonus block!  Named Just for You.

The Splendid Sampler - Goose On The Loose

This is a pretty block!  It is paper pieced. I chose to use mostly solid fabrics for this and the light blue background that is my 'constant' fabric for these blocks.  Not all have the light blue, but most will.  I throw in a cream or off white here and there.

Found myself behind on the blocks during one of those periods when my get up and go got up and went! haha   So the next few posts will be pics of the blocks I've finished.  Ready?  Here we go!

This one is called Measure Twice, Cut Once.  I digitized this using my Bernina Embroidery Software.  After the block was put together, I embroidered the words and ruler markings.
